It’s no surprise why many working professionals and recruiters stress the importance of networking during, and even after your job-searching journey. Studies show that almost 70-80% of jobs are filled before they’re even posted – employers tend to turn to their own network first, before broadening their search for a new recruit. Networking can be an important tool in your job-searching journey.

At Immploy, we understand the difficulties of growing valuable networks in a new country. Not sure where to start? Here are some effective ways to expand your professional network and unlock job opportunities in your new home.
Attend industry events & career fairs
Look for networking events, webinars, and virtual job fairs through study associations, your university, or companies. These can be a great place to look for people that are interested in hiring.
Prepare to introduce yourself and some career fields you are interested in, as well as thoughtful questions to ask.
Sending a personalised LinkedIn connection request
When connecting with someone, LinkedIn gives you the option to “add a note” that gets delivered along with your connection request. Use this as an opportunity to introduce yourself, and spark a conversation!
Remember, networking isn’t about asking for jobs—it’s about building relationships that can lead to opportunities. Check out this article for some ideas on what to include in your note.
Connecting with your country’s Chamber of Commerce
A chamber of commerce, or board of trade, is a form of business network designed to promote business interests of a certain country in a foreign place.
Chambers often host events to promote multinational businesses and organisations, and members are usually business leaders that have a strong connection between your home country and the Netherlands.
Reaching out to chamber members, or attending a networking event is the perfect place to find an opportunity that takes advantage of your unique background with a job here in the Netherlands.
Utilising your alumni network
Many universities have alumni groups or career services that can connect you with graduates in your field. Recent graduates are also likely to understand your position, and offer very relevant information or advice.
Send a polite message introducing yourself, and try to establish a connection before asking about potential job opportunities.
Joining associations
If you are a university student, associations are a great place to find opportunities that are related to your interests. These associations often are designed to help you grow your skills and knowledge that can be applied to your career in the future. Don’t be afraid to start a conversation with other association members and expand your network!
Even if you have already graduated, there are many community groups related to job searching and networking. A quick Google search should help you find a local group that you can join.
Growing your network takes patience, but even small actions like sending a LinkedIn message or attending an event can lead to big opportunities. Be genuine, show curiosity, and take advantage of every opportunity to meet new people. Before you know it, you’ll have a strong network that supports both your career and personal growth.
